A Hidden Cherry Blossom Spot in Tokyo, Right Near Haneda Airport
When it comes to spring in Japan, it’s all about “Sakura” (Cherry Blossoms). Tokyo has many famous cherry blossom spots, but they are often crowded with tourists. For those using Haneda Airport, we highly recommend “Ikegami Honmonji,” which can be accessed within 30 minutes by car or train from the airport.
This is the head temple of the Nichiren Sect with over 700 years of history, and a cherry blossom spot loved by locals. The temple grounds, where about 500 Somei-Yoshino trees bloom, is a perfect photo spot where you can enjoy the beautiful contrast between traditional Japanese architecture and cherry blossoms.
Highlight 1: The Cherry Blossom Tunnel of the 96 Stone Steps “Shikyounanjizaka”
Passing through the “Somon” (Main Gate) at the entrance of the temple, the steep 96 stone steps “Shikyounanjizaka” appear in front of you. Cherry trees are planted on both sides of these stone steps, said to have been donated by Kato Kiyomasa, and when in full bloom, it becomes like a tunnel of cherry blossoms. Looking back after climbing up out of breath, the view of the city spreading beyond the cherry blossoms is also exceptional.
Highlight 2: Collaboration of Important Cultural Property “Five-story Pagoda” and Cherry Blossoms
Entering the precincts, the “Five-story Pagoda,” the oldest in the Kanto region, towers over. The area around this tower, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is also colored with cherry blossoms. The performance of the vermilion tower and pale pink cherry blossoms is truly a landscape symbolizing “Spring in Japan.” It is sometimes lit up at night, allowing you to enjoy a fantastic atmosphere different from the daytime.
Hidden Gems: Nearby “Yogenji” and “Honmonji Park” are also Recommended
Around Ikegami Honmonji, there are other quiet spots where you can enjoy cherry blossoms. “Honmonji Park” behind the main temple and nearby “Yogenji” are also hidden spots where beautiful cherry blossoms can be seen. Yogenji, in particular, is also called the “Temple of Flowers,” and you can enjoy seasonal flowers as well as cherry blossoms.
If you want to enjoy Japanese cherry blossoms slowly avoiding the crowds, please stop by the “Ikegami Area” on your way to or from Haneda Airport.
Access
- Train: About 10 minutes walk from Tokyu Ikegami Line “Ikegami Station”
- Bus: There is no direct bus from Haneda Airport, so it is smooth to go to Kamata Station and transfer to the Tokyu Ikegami Line.
Tip: The best time to see cherry blossoms is usually from late March to early April.
